It was a new challenge for me, as I had not created a diorama containing sand and water before. In fact, I finished it (not completely) a year later, at the end of 2021, under rather exceptional circumstances.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTOXrb35Is9pq94n_fL88BB_Qpu0gAKINkI0t0MTsolWIsA3ptin6wn217b4W4ENK-SGh1_k4S36HNc26Te9jT49R7thk-6SnzzwL4ETJlpJT0frK_j0dIqIkIp_LWWDRrEYhUUN6mgIFtMDQX5IvYWu--QsPM1EeAYFmVxYTjSTmzx1FdGW1x1Jk7zw/s2000/0_ford_gpa_tamiya_box.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1294" data-original-width="2000" height="259" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTOXrb35Is9pq94n_fL88BB_Qpu0gAKINkI0t0MTsolWIsA3ptin6wn217b4W4ENK-SGh1_k4S36HNc26Te9jT49R7thk-6SnzzwL4ETJlpJT0frK_j0dIqIkIp_LWWDRrEYhUUN6mgIFtMDQX5IvYWu--QsPM1EeAYFmVxYTjSTmzx1FdGW1x1Jk7zw/w400-h259/0_ford_gpa_tamiya_box.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><p>As you can see, for a 1/35th scale kit, it was really cheap. Only 1450 yen. The painting of the box cover was really good. I would like to give my artistic skills a new chance and create an oil painting like that one in the near future.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhBsCOlhF73gON0nLRMKADNTE4LpZN7hGJgluKxw4CPoUxoey8GohIz41Zap3Xe1-ZAce8cutyl3agpKlm6Y-uyncrx3t_IQZXbxuWbJwSympDXWGPX9YIdHensYRIzMmHU9KEvaVzcP-p1zpk_6Ru7cL1rCTy7yoVXXbh0oie6MkvhNTRDLZOBW5ltQ/s1343/3_add_objects_to_ford_gpa_tamiya.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="744" data-original-width="1343" height="221" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhBsCOlhF73gON0nLRMKADNTE4LpZN7hGJgluKxw4CPoUxoey8GohIz41Zap3Xe1-ZAce8cutyl3agpKlm6Y-uyncrx3t_IQZXbxuWbJwSympDXWGPX9YIdHensYRIzMmHU9KEvaVzcP-p1zpk_6Ru7cL1rCTy7yoVXXbh0oie6MkvhNTRDLZOBW5ltQ/w400-h221/3_add_objects_to_ford_gpa_tamiya.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><p>I assembled all the parts as explained in the kit manual. You can use any artistic solvent you prefer but I suggest using odorless petroleum. Otherwise, scale modeling thinners such as MIG:s enamel odorless thinner or Mr. Weathering solvent 110 work as well.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEje_JKaaDERIYSIbrrGrrdjRYz89GDpxaAzOj74smLeWbar1jGz-qQDTlbR2XhT5E5QEhULIdz_ByM2Fz7l_TpYdBIAMp_D8FC12K8Z_ybIkJqIhNyk7f1W_nlCgwoGODRBrYfu1j16MiFY/s1500/08-8-weathering.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1089" data-original-width="1500" height="290" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEje_JKaaDERIYSIbrrGrrdjRYz89GDpxaAzOj74smLeWbar1jGz-qQDTlbR2XhT5E5QEhULIdz_ByM2Fz7l_TpYdBIAMp_D8FC12K8Z_ybIkJqIhNyk7f1W_nlCgwoGODRBrYfu1j16MiFY/w400-h290/08-8-weathering.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Next, I added some streaking effects and chipping all over the vehicle using the same oil paints. If you are a good observer you will have noticed that all photos share a common characteristic. They are completely in focus. Normally, when you take a close-up photo like this one, some parts of the tank will be out of focus.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEio_qdXLkdIFNG4H_8BbOhkMf356ALtO2KCzvvOIuQmHK8vV7HBjElSxdD22ir7GW9M7mF9FnNwxo8GR4KnVNVmDhW9c5Ei3fM_BXEIfMAy8rTjnFgVLMHVd4qtdNr0-hwbJLVeOZNjiVna/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="1578" data-original-width="2048" height="309" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEio_qdXLkdIFNG4H_8BbOhkMf356ALtO2KCzvvOIuQmHK8vV7HBjElSxdD22ir7GW9M7mF9FnNwxo8GR4KnVNVmDhW9c5Ei3fM_BXEIfMAy8rTjnFgVLMHVd4qtdNr0-hwbJLVeOZNjiVna/w400-h309/helicon-7g.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">One option to increase the depth-of-field is to take the photo from a little further away and using a long focal distance lens. However, such lenses are usually quite expensive. The trick here is to use focus stacking. Actually, all of these pictures were taken using a very cheap (around $100) Huawei smartphone. I took them using an awesome Android application called <a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.sourceforge.opencamera&hl=en_US&gl=US">OpenCamera</a>.When you open the application touch the symbol with 3 dots. That will open a menu with many interesting features. One of the features I use the most is NR (Noise reduction). </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgG7BU2D2B4vZxvqnIltz6UtSxBRVNoVNZ5c4Tvexo1TKBS8OxdmFoYhIdwqDwiZZQ7Txmx3Gl3ji2TluCHvkNGjoRqVpxAT_z5T-SyZumgmQPS3IQRpVJRWiIqjVjLPbxO8YS-3uXHv4CP/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="1576" data-original-width="2048" height="308" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgG7BU2D2B4vZxvqnIltz6UtSxBRVNoVNZ5c4Tvexo1TKBS8OxdmFoYhIdwqDwiZZQ7Txmx3Gl3ji2TluCHvkNGjoRqVpxAT_z5T-SyZumgmQPS3IQRpVJRWiIqjVjLPbxO8YS-3uXHv4CP/w400-h308/helicon-5g.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />For focus stacking, you need to choose the feature indicated as "FOCUS{}" on the same menu. Additionally, on the same menu, you can specify how many photos you want to take for each shot (for example, 6 shots for each). Going back to the camera menu you will now see 3 sliders on the left. The lowest one is just for zooming. The other 2 are the interesting ones. One slider will allow you to set the source distance (the closest point that you want in focus ) and the other slider is to set the target distance (the furthest point in the tank that you want to be in focus). When you take a picture, the application will take multiple shots starting from the source distance and increasing the focus distance for each shot until the target distance. It's important that you don't move the smartphone while the application is taking the shots. The best is to put your smartphone on a tripod and use the timer for the first shot. Once you have your shots, you need a software in your PC to compose the final picture. For that, you can choose the open-source tool <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CombineZ">Combine-ZP</a>, which uses the Pyramid algorithm. Aitendo store kits are very reasonably priced and there is a great variety. Note that I have already talked about other kits in the past, check the <a href="http://sangorrin.blogspot.com/2015/09/fm-microphone-kit-from-aitendo.html">FM microphone</a> and <a href="http://sangorrin.blogspot.com/2015/09/reflow-soldering-and-achandeino.html">Achandeino</a>. In this post, I wanted to introduce two new kits that I bought and I liked them.
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQxZ68WilvzzB_yN9-7Jf5oQ2Zat62onLlDFjtlRQb8DYkvM3CQpqiVKiU4hQF_QdRprfwWNdqQMRTpGKt27ASu1-_9pyJOr2fYHmf3Y3Ib_l4rxKdNknIcRT-N2WmcDPZBKOB1isV4Hth/s1600/1-IMG_20190105_202424.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="973" data-original-width="1200" height="324" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQxZ68WilvzzB_yN9-7Jf5oQ2Zat62onLlDFjtlRQb8DYkvM3CQpqiVKiU4hQF_QdRprfwWNdqQMRTpGKt27ASu1-_9pyJOr2fYHmf3Y3Ib_l4rxKdNknIcRT-N2WmcDPZBKOB1isV4Hth/s400/1-IMG_20190105_202424.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The first kit is a hearing aid circuit (<a href="http://www.aitendo.com/product/12383">補聴器キット Hochōki kit</a>).
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj34_oItCIZO8MEUocnoz7aH15Y3xRqJULsgzBZ5mOuK6U56KaYgLChqrBOtsmDnVILpR6pdfY44jW_UT0mVJg2C4c1X0lX0nxcx6hfp3wSNYNebW8lvedDD1HOGhZH-_PiHHESZjKNYjc_/s1600/3-IMG_20190430_150925.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1200" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj34_oItCIZO8MEUocnoz7aH15Y3xRqJULsgzBZ5mOuK6U56KaYgLChqrBOtsmDnVILpR6pdfY44jW_UT0mVJg2C4c1X0lX0nxcx6hfp3wSNYNebW8lvedDD1HOGhZH-_PiHHESZjKNYjc_/s320/3-IMG_20190430_150925.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
As you probably guessed, the circuit captures sounds through a microphone and amplifies them with a transistor. The user with hearing problems listens to them through headphones.
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiB29FQ-e82HW5c2Le7o5SWjJyLZJTkrpTnatlY95XWW3jcjbnC40nNK8MeC9UqcSgs4QB8eHAfaUJcGtjmnG5sUBGw8drv6jr1P4901Z5rxuiAq1FrrHnHM7VPHemDBJCnQm5ARx_c4n1P/s1600/2-IMG_20180917_161723.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1274" data-original-width="1600" height="319" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiB29FQ-e82HW5c2Le7o5SWjJyLZJTkrpTnatlY95XWW3jcjbnC40nNK8MeC9UqcSgs4QB8eHAfaUJcGtjmnG5sUBGw8drv6jr1P4901Z5rxuiAq1FrrHnHM7VPHemDBJCnQm5ARx_c4n1P/s400/2-IMG_20180917_161723.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The second kit is a Tesla coil plasma speaker (<a href="http://www.aitendo.com/product/15327">テスラ電光音発生器 Tesura denkō-on hassei-ki</a>). By the way, there are now other Tesla kits with larger coils.
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgveSJGLS9aIitrJobyIHijOM0Lncia1IN_hZ5bTcoiAZq5Mc_QwX45HFlX1AdtrOcFhxT1-0-fk_aWv9WCvoIy64B9GHQN9Qw4niDMHBGPuNDw0ljOiNhRtvn9COlj0kOyphjqLeeQFaBz/s1600/3-IMG_20180919_194415.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1533" data-original-width="1600" height="383" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgveSJGLS9aIitrJobyIHijOM0Lncia1IN_hZ5bTcoiAZq5Mc_QwX45HFlX1AdtrOcFhxT1-0-fk_aWv9WCvoIy64B9GHQN9Qw4niDMHBGPuNDw0ljOiNhRtvn9COlj0kOyphjqLeeQFaBz/s400/3-IMG_20180919_194415.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
This circuit is somewhat more complicated to explain. Basically, it is a high-frequency oscillator that accumulates energy in the coil. The oscillator wave is amplitude modulated by another input wave, for example, music. Bringing a screwdriver to one end of the coil produces an electric arc discharge and makes noise. That noise when modulated by the song turns the coil into a speaker.

</div>
<br />
It is best to see it with your own eyes. Watch the video I recorded.<br />

<br />
You can also use the kit to light a fluorescent lamp.Sangorrinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13773761503933579563noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7227407500212291254.post-76026740718538348352019-02-22T22:43:00.003+01:002019-02-22T22:50:06.628+01:00Kung Fu moviesIf you were born in the early 80s, then there is a reasonable chance that you were a Kung Fu films lover like me. I remember myself going every week to the video rental shop to check if a new Kung Fu film had arrived.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/jJid5CRJWzU" width="560"></iframe> </div>
The first Kung Fu film I watched was "Incredible Kung Fu Mission" (Shi xiong shi di zhai chu ma) created in 1979. I watched it by chance when I was about 6 years old and it was in <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Betamax">Betamax</a> format. Probably the only film I've watched in such format. This is the quintessential Kung Fu movie, I really like it.<br />
<br />

<br />
One of the things I like the most about Kung Fu movies are those crazy jumps. They actually have a name in chinese 轻功 (<i style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 15.104px;"><span lang="zh-Latn-pinyin"><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qinggong">qīnggōng</a></span></i>) which is a useful keyword to look for images on Google.<br />

If I stop for a second and look around, I usually found myself surrounded by a lot of stuff that I don't always understand or pay attention to.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjF79TPTaw1xlkNJ2pr4YO9_0GyyH4BQNn8vy4dcyL3yVU11HIjaVKgIOa0BKkebagSa9DjMVnfYuyL6m2Et1KcW3534Yc2m3gWRsiHnCB6XUBpWKPhX0IELmq2lyfMNhOPF69KBBkwCT5r/s1600/1-IMG_20190201_134328.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="832" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjF79TPTaw1xlkNJ2pr4YO9_0GyyH4BQNn8vy4dcyL3yVU11HIjaVKgIOa0BKkebagSa9DjMVnfYuyL6m2Et1KcW3534Yc2m3gWRsiHnCB6XUBpWKPhX0IELmq2lyfMNhOPF69KBBkwCT5r/s400/1-IMG_20190201_134328.jpg" width="276" /></a></div>
<br />
For example, I found this weird looking device inside a cabinet on the street. I took a picture of it to look it up on the internet later. It turns out that this is an electric street lamp switch (called EE switch by Panasonic). In other words, a device that automatically regulates the current that goes through a street light based on the ambient light.Sangorrinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13773761503933579563noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7227407500212291254.post-84846163522078539772019-02-13T12:22:00.002+01:002019-02-13T12:23:09.149+01:00Fixing my Sunto wrist watchI rarely wear a watch nowadays. Most of the time I prefer to use the phone instead to tell the time. However, sometimes I like to dress up and wristwatches are nice accessories that make you look better.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHhC39km8FVOXwG5Hefb_k0fmhcBDXzU2niQQWmGNodD1ImcMdQY3gm4GdBSOQoJEz1MsYt4HYFzDL2vIHP3MOvfLwbi9OHJ8PQAj56tr875t4M8WwNnMoFiG7GLN_LSBpM0BcoVSDs7A3/s1600/1-IMG_20181117_141726.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="935" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHhC39km8FVOXwG5Hefb_k0fmhcBDXzU2niQQWmGNodD1ImcMdQY3gm4GdBSOQoJEz1MsYt4HYFzDL2vIHP3MOvfLwbi9OHJ8PQAj56tr875t4M8WwNnMoFiG7GLN_LSBpM0BcoVSDs7A3/s400/1-IMG_20181117_141726.jpg" width="311" /></a></div>
<br />
Unfortunately, my otherwise excellent Suunto watch wasn't looking that good with all those scratches. I needed to get rid of them. Fortunately, during the last few years, I assembled quite a few <a href="http://sangorrin.blogspot.com/2016/07/plastic-models-tamiya-sdkfz232-148_5.html">plastic scale model</a> kits and learned a few tricks along.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsjRhIOfZGFwudHoNSdoaOCTJZFIpu51-6Tx9r7KBay6bVlLNPfnwZEDLp7gyXcxEzzTENaJ-pHqr85swXr0EfIaiaXlR5CaK4ImiHb6lO54NlDSTH0ubF4s1NH6EuiUE0WxzdT5KrdJS9/s1600/3-IMG_20181117_143851.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="967" data-original-width="1200" height="321" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsjRhIOfZGFwudHoNSdoaOCTJZFIpu51-6Tx9r7KBay6bVlLNPfnwZEDLp7gyXcxEzzTENaJ-pHqr85swXr0EfIaiaXlR5CaK4ImiHb6lO54NlDSTH0ubF4s1NH6EuiUE0WxzdT5KrdJS9/s400/3-IMG_20181117_143851.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
To remove the scratches from the Suunto surface, I first applied a fine-grained (number 1000) piece of Tamiya sandpaper. Remember that the higher the grit number, the finer and more polished appearance you get.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2JshutH5rXA-YXScjIxw9B-1JPvTAXL6y1DE3Bj9-8cAyWrWM-9MSYqp-kkNtdb2cA_XiA_djvI09upUr6AyzSsRiFbvoZW8E66SG0tCmICZqDyO_Wu7fqBhHxBhV2Fs3mdhou9EpFa37/s1600/2-IMG_20181117_141923.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="866" data-original-width="1200" height="287" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2JshutH5rXA-YXScjIxw9B-1JPvTAXL6y1DE3Bj9-8cAyWrWM-9MSYqp-kkNtdb2cA_XiA_djvI09upUr6AyzSsRiFbvoZW8E66SG0tCmICZqDyO_Wu7fqBhHxBhV2Fs3mdhou9EpFa37/s400/2-IMG_20181117_141923.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Once I removed the main scratches from the surface, I applied Tamiya polishing compound with a cloth multiple times. I didn't know about compound until I built this <a href="http://sangorrin.blogspot.com/2017/04/my-second-diorama-greyhound.html">Greyhound scale model</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXmMKJNXcgsUSBwPAK0qHtgTIWuHIAZRrP_XqmVoDKMJnGtSGBaJuhxOXXiDiryvlQ-0Nwf9s1dQi2MwO_UxgdAS2jZpXP_MxjuhW3VK2Yuu4hgk9PvLn20QTBBt84y9PlmwaWJrBVTmGV/s1600/4-IMG_20181117_144446.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="929" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXmMKJNXcgsUSBwPAK0qHtgTIWuHIAZRrP_XqmVoDKMJnGtSGBaJuhxOXXiDiryvlQ-0Nwf9s1dQi2MwO_UxgdAS2jZpXP_MxjuhW3VK2Yuu4hgk9PvLn20QTBBt84y9PlmwaWJrBVTmGV/s320/4-IMG_20181117_144446.jpg" width="247" /></a></div>
<br />
The end result was quite satisfying. The crystal was now transparent and smooth, just as I wanted. I also replaced the battery and the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/O-ring">O-ring</a> with Suunto battery replacement kit.Sangorrinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13773761503933579563noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7227407500212291254.post-8914045263500023822019-02-07T13:03:00.001+01:002019-02-07T13:04:01.148+01:00Mt. KōbōA couple of weeks ago, I went hiking <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_K%C5%8Db%C5%8D">Mount Kōbō</a> (弘法山 Kōbō-yama). Mount Kōbō is an easy day trip from Tokyo or Kanagawa with good access through the Odakyu Odawara line. This time I got off at Hadano station, climbed Mount Kōbō and then went walking towards Tsurumakionsen station where I had a relaxing thermal bath (onsen).<br />

I suggest doing this hike in Winter when the air is clean and you have greater chances to see Mt. Fuji and the surrounding areas.<br />

Near the mountain, there is a nice farm with sheeps grazing and waiting for you to give them some food. The workshop consisted of a pre-orientation session on Tuesday and 2 days of wet lab experiments during the weekend.<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguqOp6s9t5ExgNiLOgV-Zgf3qYZp9DrrxamL-nIOGHeTOwqiOvih7R3GrgHT4iEqyJEQRCEuaWf88k25IUHHj4siagNspxw4W9fycuBHr4YZrSqKPnIZ6wOoAVE___31kd7sEOctYyZVDe/s1600/doctor-facebook.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="757" data-original-width="817" height="370" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguqOp6s9t5ExgNiLOgV-Zgf3qYZp9DrrxamL-nIOGHeTOwqiOvih7R3GrgHT4iEqyJEQRCEuaWf88k25IUHHj4siagNspxw4W9fycuBHr4YZrSqKPnIZ6wOoAVE___31kd7sEOctYyZVDe/s400/doctor-facebook.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
We had a total of 5 attendants, and it was quite challenging to coordinate all of them to complete the workshop in time. Fortunately, the students were all extremely nice and never had a problem with them.<br />
<br />

<br />
I spent quite a lot of time creating the slides of the pre-orientation session. You can see them above if you want to know the details of the workshop. On Saturday, we extracted DNA from pig and cow liver and amplified a region of the mitochondrial DNA called Cytochrome B by using <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polymerase_chain_reaction">PCR</a>. Then we mixed the PCR product with a solution of taq1 restriction enzyme and let it digest overnight. On Sunday, we conducted a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gel_electrophoresis">ge</a><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gel_electrophoresis">l electrophoresis</a> to identify the length of DNA fragments that remained after the digestion. The pattern observed allowed us to distinguish pig tissues from cow tissues.Sangorrinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13773761503933579563noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7227407500212291254.post-27205370488171262632019-02-07T12:22:00.000+01:002019-02-07T12:22:18.935+01:00Tennis in JapanRecently I got a tennis racquet from <a href="https://auctions.yahoo.co.jp/">Yahoo auctions</a> and I have already played a few times. I am a complete beginner but also a fast learner. At the moment, I am able to serve quite fast but with low accuracy. I also need to control the strength I use to hit the ball.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEii7Y50mX6rL1RXD0Tz24WOIEgAgEZayWJbJocuybEANq3VnJ5h_Y4u-ilo_E8Z9O-P8uOmWQmDz5kCbq53yJTbAPAd1JTWD8qyNbPmR71Z8On0JBx_0nRzahilsH2m_6eUkk2hra9fEizw/s1600/tennis-sangorrin.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="956" data-original-width="1200" height="317" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEii7Y50mX6rL1RXD0Tz24WOIEgAgEZayWJbJocuybEANq3VnJ5h_Y4u-ilo_E8Z9O-P8uOmWQmDz5kCbq53yJTbAPAd1JTWD8qyNbPmR71Z8On0JBx_0nRzahilsH2m_6eUkk2hra9fEizw/s400/tennis-sangorrin.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
If you are alone but you want to play tennis, or if you have a group but you don't know how to reserve a tennis court, I suggest you use the <a class="" href="https://www.tennisoff.net/">Tennisoff</a> website. For example, you can apply to entries containing the sentence 参加者募集中, which means "recruiting participants". Also, if you live close to Tokyo there are <a href="https://www.meetup.com/ja-JP/Fun-Tennis-in-Tokyo-Beginer-to-Low-Intermediate/">tennis meetups</a> where you can participate.Sangorrinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13773761503933579563noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7227407500212291254.post-68506660157065027072019-01-17T15:47:00.001+01:002019-01-17T15:51:34.500+01:00Open Source Conference Tokyo Fall 2018I forgot to report on <a href="https://www.ospn.jp/osc2018-fall/">Open Source Conference</a><a href="https://www.blogger.com/null"> (OSC) Tokyo/Fall 2018</a>. This is probably about the 8th time I attend OSC, but I have only reported it a <a href="http://sangorrin.blogspot.com/2017/05/osc-2017-spring.html">couple</a> of <a href="http://sangorrin.blogspot.com/2013/11/osc2013.html">times</a>. As usual, the event was held at <a href="http://www.meisei-u.ac.jp/">Meisei University</a>, about 15 minutes walk from the <a href="https://www.tokyo-zoo.net/english/tama/main.html">Tama Zoo</a> and its station. Actually, I'm embarrassed to say that I have never visited the zoo. Maybe I'll do next time.<br />

The talks. You can find them listed on the event website both for the <a href="https://www.ospn.jp/osc2018-fall/modules/eventrsv/?id=1&noform=1">27th</a> and <a href="https://www.ospn.jp/osc2018-fall/modules/eventrsv/?id=2&noform=1">28th</a> sessions. The first talk I went to was given by <a href="https://www.slideshare.net/ftake/btrfs-121076162">ftake</a>, and it was useful to catch up with <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Btrfs">Btrfs</a> and its <a href="https://github.com/openSUSE/transactional-update">transactional updates</a>. I also attended a talk about project <a href="https://simulator.sebastien.ai/login.html">Sebastien</a> (android <a href="https://github.com/atware/sebastien_android_sample">sample</a>).<br />

Apart from the talks, the <a href="https://www.ospn.jp/osc2018-fall/modules/article/article.php?articleid=1">booths</a> were impressive as usual. <b>Conclusions:</b> going to OSC is always a good learning experience. I got interested in hacking some second-hand router. I also found super cool the telescope made by @nanbuwks, and I was impressed by Murachue's Linux porting to the Nintendo64.<br />

I spent most of my time working, attending meetings and discussing projects.<br />

I used the little free time I had to explore the streets of Edinburgh. I was impressed by the city's architecture, and I loved the cobblestone paths and old-style buildings.<br />

In particular, the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edinburgh_Castle">Edinburgh castle</a>, which is on top of a hill in the middle of the city, was astonishing. The Linux foundation organised a sweet party inside the castle, and even a better one in the <a href="https://www.nms.ac.uk/national-museum-of-scotland/">National Museum of Scotland</a>, another must-see.<br />

After my hiking trips in <a href="http://sangorrin.blogspot.com/2007/03/wales.html">Snowdonia</a> and the <a href="http://sangorrin.blogspot.com/2008/09/wales-black-mountains.html">Black Mountains</a> in Wales, as well as my trip to the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_District">Lake District </a>in North West England, I had always wanted to hike in Scotland. I didn't have time for a long route, but luckily Edinburgh has a hill called <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur%27s_Seat">Arthur's Seat</a> within walking distance.Sangorrinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13773761503933579563noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7227407500212291254.post-50132527437304985372018-12-29T04:04:00.003+01:002018-12-29T04:05:38.287+01:00Kaigai Manga Festa 2018A month ago, I had the chance to visit the <a href="https://www.kaigaimangafesta.com/event2018">Kaigai Manga Festa</a> comic exhibition for the first time. It was collocated with <a href="https://www.comitia.co.jp/html/126.html">Comitia 126</a>, a famous periodic manga convention held in different cities of Japan throughout the year.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
The event took place at Tokyo Big Sight and the entrance fee, which included a catalogue book, was 1000 yen. For some reason, the entrance was free after around 13:00.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1MCA4HU8zp-cE2sPg1eKggMzr42jzvFOJYPRvsTrTnafkMokPyLFNJoSaz9qHTXvL6evxZKcjW-J9RJoU5A64xd6XqTPR93EJXM0OBwcxnsHc9Z4Xbc7cgeWXiIouSwzwbUy7Z7oqx7Mt/s1600/IMG_20181125_120347.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1252" data-original-width="1600" height="312" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1MCA4HU8zp-cE2sPg1eKggMzr42jzvFOJYPRvsTrTnafkMokPyLFNJoSaz9qHTXvL6evxZKcjW-J9RJoU5A64xd6XqTPR93EJXM0OBwcxnsHc9Z4Xbc7cgeWXiIouSwzwbUy7Z7oqx7Mt/s400/IMG_20181125_120347.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
One of the main attractions was the live drawing event by <a href="http://www.kimjunggi.net/">Kim Jung Gi</a> (<a href="https://twitter.com/kimjunggius">@KimJungGiUS</a>, <a href="https://twitter.com/kimjunggi_jp">@kimjunggi_jp</a>). This was actually the second time I watched him drawing live, the first time being at <a href="https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e3069.html">Nakano Broadway</a>. During his performance, Kim usually answers various questions from the audience and the commentators. It must be hard for him to concentrate!. Then, <a href="https://twitter.com/kageyama_risa">Risa Kageyama</a> translates his words into Japanese.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdN9b2cZ7fszqBSrzGe8R_td0lv0w35aIsjVzxhxSziiNHWrnUIC5vufJS37Dj6Bj9koikHPimb21iI6bTwJeYXXBAg1PsZ0P7RLCV4-zFdRNrRKQNc30W8x_wkcGLJWnSB9Oh44jTTJh_/s1600/1-IMG_20181125_124838-001.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="534" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdN9b2cZ7fszqBSrzGe8R_td0lv0w35aIsjVzxhxSziiNHWrnUIC5vufJS37Dj6Bj9koikHPimb21iI6bTwJeYXXBAg1PsZ0P7RLCV4-zFdRNrRKQNc30W8x_wkcGLJWnSB9Oh44jTTJh_/s1600/1-IMG_20181125_124838-001.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
This time the canvas was a bit hard to see, so the process was projected on a big screen. The way that Kim Jung Gi draws is mind-blowing. It looks like he has the whole composition inside his mind and he can start drawing from anywhere without any reference lines.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlEdXZZeUOkDzYcw3iCPSZLEpVNJsDyD84N1eOo7qlJtytAyFVa3Bi85FwXGiUa5kggmXcrCmMwbB9XRDNzElOYl7mlzmS89r3CRLpJ5TpZNvidrZutsq8e-2L3uH0Ez955p6rO0ACkszf/s1600/1-IMG_20181125_145236.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlEdXZZeUOkDzYcw3iCPSZLEpVNJsDyD84N1eOo7qlJtytAyFVa3Bi85FwXGiUa5kggmXcrCmMwbB9XRDNzElOYl7mlzmS89r3CRLpJ5TpZNvidrZutsq8e-2L3uH0Ez955p6rO0ACkszf/s400/1-IMG_20181125_145236.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
This was the final result. Kim is not really that good at drawing cute anime-like girls. His style is closer to the kind of artists that used to publish on the <a href="http://www.heavymetal.com/">Heavy Metal</a> magazine. I guess that was a character related to the sponsor of the event, the <a href="https://funs-project.com/">Fun's Project Channel</a>, an excellent website with <a href="https://college.funs-project.com/">educational contents</a> for artists and creators. There are more pictures and a <a href="https://t.co/zrW9GY2jST">video</a> on Kim's Twitter <a href="https://twitter.com/kimjunggi_jp">account</a>, make sure you check them out.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEwvz5pbMHCGbGn2bX-w7qKB6h-N-h7E_ZI3ht6usFAOw0UWuDN6esSgNzad6WBbJF8m4Y2c_626kp3lyUan14PFQp8JKhQJidOjOQTPojVEe2Z6G2QvTYWahsDFxKhpHdjwUjPU0FIpHs/s1600/5-IMG_20181125_163248.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1200" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEwvz5pbMHCGbGn2bX-w7qKB6h-N-h7E_ZI3ht6usFAOw0UWuDN6esSgNzad6WBbJF8m4Y2c_626kp3lyUan14PFQp8JKhQJidOjOQTPojVEe2Z6G2QvTYWahsDFxKhpHdjwUjPU0FIpHs/s400/5-IMG_20181125_163248.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Apart from Kim, other notable artists such as Sean Phillips or Duncan Fegredo attended the convention. I also took the opportunity to walk by the booths in Comitia 126 and discover great artists such as:<br />
<ul>
<li><a href="https://www.instagram.com/pochi1989/">@pochi1989</a></li>
<li><a class="" href="https://www.krenzartwork.com/">krenzartwork</a></li>
<li><a class="" href="https://twitter.com/hunwaritoast">hunwaritoast</a></li>
<li><a href="https://twitter.com/kaitan0908">kaitan0908</a></li>
<li><a class="" href="http://tekkotz.tumblr.com/">dieselzombie</a></li>
<li><a href="https://twitter.com/ue_tateri?lang=en">ue_tateri</a></li>
<li><a href="https://twitter.com/na_ff_y">naffy</a></li>
<li><a href="http://mots.jp/">JohnHathway</a></li>
<li><a href="https://twitter.com/taiwan_shurara">@taiwan_shurara</a></li>
</ul>
I also found interesting some commercial sites with booths in the event such as:<br />
<div>
<ul>
<li><a href="https://haikeisouko.com/">haikeisouko</a> (manga and anime backgrounds)</li>
<li><a href="https://www.dmm.co.jp/dc/doujin/">fanza</a> (digital adult manga shop)</li>
<li><a href="https://www.amazon.co.jp/manga/indie">kindle indie mangas</a> (lots of amateur manga for free!).</li>
</ul>
Finally, I learned about a tool in Blender called "grease pen" that I need to check.</div>

Artificial intelligence and cloud computing are two topics that I love, and this event was great to catch up with the latest developments.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtGUXUa_nXNykkPdbk7rogl1ka3RePSbsAJXddk3pFBaGthilnyuCXAJrbqoP-D709DcYy4ypoorQZDvRd8CgH-0mcN9CZ5Ng5jGU3bM3jGh-Swxv24cBNMHsSwQm8YnwnEJ99u-5qlRa_/s1600/1-IMG_20180920_130742.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtGUXUa_nXNykkPdbk7rogl1ka3RePSbsAJXddk3pFBaGthilnyuCXAJrbqoP-D709DcYy4ypoorQZDvRd8CgH-0mcN9CZ5Ng5jGU3bM3jGh-Swxv24cBNMHsSwQm8YnwnEJ99u-5qlRa_/s400/1-IMG_20180920_130742.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The event was divided into two physically separated areas: one for developers and another one for business. I only attended the former. The stages were pleasantly illuminated, and in general, everything was well organized.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEistbzJZ5CgtaDQpx_R_3CmRCmfM5XnT8v68ZSNLvooLUBFt0YOMtav6uRKL-1S1aWM4N-BiL2gOyfeseiIj4HtqjqpKOHs9HIAgdlariPTvddsOoLHUMyk6OIgXCK780WqijAsyR07BYDT/s1600/2-IMG_20180920_144447.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEistbzJZ5CgtaDQpx_R_3CmRCmfM5XnT8v68ZSNLvooLUBFt0YOMtav6uRKL-1S1aWM4N-BiL2gOyfeseiIj4HtqjqpKOHs9HIAgdlariPTvddsOoLHUMyk6OIgXCK780WqijAsyR07BYDT/s400/2-IMG_20180920_144447.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
There were numerous technical sessions during the event. Thankfully, Google released an <a href="https://cloud.withgoogle.com/next18/tokyo/app">Android application</a> that made it easy to reserve a seat and receive notifications in real-time. Talks were videotaped and published a few weeks ago on Google Cloud Japan's Youtube <a href="https://www.youtube.com/user/googleappsjapan">channel</a> (see the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLmoHjhhs3ySEEkZnUdKglsCi0dW4ef8xu">sessions playlist</a>). Unfortunately for non-japanese speakers, the videos are all dubbed into Japanese, and there is no option to select the original audio track :(<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2T8nsybX5JN_OFgl0o7Bqr7Ni8uJU-XbGBh_TDF_1iR9r-EkDvBBkqRc67pihJwCATBNeyR-jQXJ1xr5VmmyfG7aQ4WutTuC-4I_TsJKmsnU5rabhJ7fpiJhne7rYJ3Rupe-TRfhWCCYC/s1600/1-IMG_20180920_154622.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1200" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2T8nsybX5JN_OFgl0o7Bqr7Ni8uJU-XbGBh_TDF_1iR9r-EkDvBBkqRc67pihJwCATBNeyR-jQXJ1xr5VmmyfG7aQ4WutTuC-4I_TsJKmsnU5rabhJ7fpiJhne7rYJ3Rupe-TRfhWCCYC/s400/1-IMG_20180920_154622.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Apart from the sessions, there was a spacious booth area for attendants to learn about Google Cloud services through demos (e.g., <a href="https://japantaxi.co.jp/">JapanTaxi</a>'s demo) and example architectures (e.g., architectures for game backends).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
The next day, I attended another <a href="https://ygcpug.connpass.com/event/99052/">event</a>, organized by GCPUG (Google Cloud Platform User Group) Yokohama, that hosted 2 great presentations by Mete Atamel (<a href="https://dialogflow.com/">Dialogflow</a>) and Felipe Hoffa (<a href="https://cloud.google.com/bigquery/">BigQuery</a>).<br />
<br />
<b>Conclusions:</b> Google Cloud Next was exciting, and I learned a lot about cloud architectures and recent developments in machine learning services such as BigQuery ML. Techbookfest events are events with booths where software and hardware fans can sell their own publications.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgiedKFZhhxTzwCQvrUuv0Qd0BIYtXfrYWGs8iG7-JXfKd1DLzLuOim2EhHCB5ul9oMrgXGDdGOBD15dhTNKNZGKol96VmjbLQlHNHquiF18FGIwmkOhiQQSb4DjylNO0DGDg2iidN-wtSR/s1600/1-IMG_20181008_115922.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="800" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgiedKFZhhxTzwCQvrUuv0Qd0BIYtXfrYWGs8iG7-JXfKd1DLzLuOim2EhHCB5ul9oMrgXGDdGOBD15dhTNKNZGKol96VmjbLQlHNHquiF18FGIwmkOhiQQSb4DjylNO0DGDg2iidN-wtSR/s400/1-IMG_20181008_115922.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
The events are quite popular. During the first few hours, you can expect a long queue of people ready to buy their favourite publications before they get sold out. The first event I attended was <a href="https://techbookfest.org/event/tbf02">Techbookfest 2</a> and it was held in Akihabara. I remember having to wait for a couple of hours in the rain. <a href="https://techbookfest.org/event/tbf05">Techbookfest 5</a> was held in Ikebukuro. There was a long queue as well but at least it was sheltered.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
There were many interesting <a href="https://techbookfest.org/event/tbf05/circle">circles</a> (a person or group of persons in charge of a booth) in Techbookfest 5. Personally, I bought a <a href="https://taimen.jp/f/729">publication</a> related to a 3D modeling software I have been learning for a while called <a href="https://ephtracy.github.io/">MagicaVoxel</a>. It seems that the <a href="https://twitter.com/henteko07">author</a> has also published a book on Kindle called <a href="http://amzn.asia/d/7sd3yKk">3D dot modelling</a> (3Dドットモデリング) and has its own voxel <a href="https://voxel.henteko07.com/">webpage</a>. I also bought a <a href="https://niccolli.booth.pm/items/1026724">publication</a> about creating your own cartridges for the old Game Boy by <a href="https://log.niccol.li/2018/10/blog-post.html">Nicolli</a>. There was also a <a href="https://cubic-style.jp/">similar circle</a> specialized on the Game Boy advance (GBA). I also got a <a href="https://taimen.jp/f/742">publication</a> related to GAN (Generative Adversarial Network) whose <a href="https://github.com/UdonDa/gijutusyoten">author</a> used to convert a ramen picture into a curry rice one. Finally, I bought another <a href="http://koso2dan.kakurezato.com/diary.html">publication</a> about modeling and 3D printing a robot that was then imported into <a href="http://www.ros.org/">ROS</a>.<br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>Conclusions:</b> Techbookfest is a really nice event if you like software or hardware technical stuff. I hope I can participate as a book writer in the future. I was happy to see that many booths offered their publications in digital format, for example through <a href="https://taimen.jp/">taimen</a> or <a href="https://booth.pm/en">booth</a>.Sangorrinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13773761503933579563noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7227407500212291254.post-62830730723421885492018-10-14T16:08:00.002+02:002018-10-14T16:08:37.926+02:00Climbing Mt. We used the the Hinataooya (日向大谷) route to get to the top of Ryoukamisan and then went back using the Nanatakizawa (七滝沢) route. Here you can download my <a href="https://drive.google.com/open?id=154CL2IMg9kr68jObcy76aEGqRmhukSv3">GPS log</a>. With its 1723m I would say that Ryoukamisan requires a bit of hiking experience. There are quite a few steep areas that will require you to use the chains anchored to nearby rocks. When we arrived at the top everything was cloudy. For that reason, I can't tell you if the views are good or not.<br />

My second one (actually my sister's) was a Nintendo 64. I loved Super Mario 64, Diddy kong racing, Wave race 64 and many others. My third console was a PSP. I enjoyed playing Ridge racer and Daxter on it. And that was it. After that, for a period of more than 10 years I haven't played any game.

<br />
I thought I wanted to catch up with that, so I visited the <a href="https://expo.nikkeibp.co.jp/tgs/2018/public/en/">Tokyo Game Show 2018</a>. The exhibition was held in the Makuhari Messe, in Chiba (not Tokyo!), and concentrated a number of big game makers and indie studios as well. According to <a href="https://expo.nikkeibp.co.jp/tgs/2018/common/pdf/0923/WEB180923_en.pdf">this report</a>, there were around 107,310 attendants the day I went, on Saturday September 22nd, which was open to the general public.
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIgC0uv-MDoZqRdy7_oHgAFnThxN39SNQh9DAGWcyvZNPfw7RznjJ4OST1ldSyu7sSpj5Yaodo2SWv6QMBO5qBSaS0vbZYZYprhT0ZeR9KdBlSIQYqMU5mDDY5LdnF4LlQuxOmtZfZBxrI/s1600/10-IMG_20180922_120155.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="922" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIgC0uv-MDoZqRdy7_oHgAFnThxN39SNQh9DAGWcyvZNPfw7RznjJ4OST1ldSyu7sSpj5Yaodo2SWv6QMBO5qBSaS0vbZYZYprhT0ZeR9KdBlSIQYqMU5mDDY5LdnF4LlQuxOmtZfZBxrI/s400/10-IMG_20180922_120155.jpg" width="231" /></a></div>
<br />
The exhibition was divided into several halls, and there was a <a href="https://4c281b16296b2ab02a4e0b2e3f75446d.cdnext.stream.ne.jp/tgs/2018/public/map_public.pdf">very useful map</a> at the entrance that indicated the location of each exhibitor. The largest game makers had amazing booths with quality lightning, multiple events, and even television coverage. There were also many cute models promoting the games and getting the attraction of all cameras.
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdd8PslKQjiWg0mGErW5whsXd31jRfgRNpvg-O27sE8kzvOMDRmt9-_lN1fKEyHU7vClS5s8HuxvodIfs3dBW8uEkgg6BHgRBkzkUkkun40wzseeuMvX2hSBX_VXQ97iLMZ1LBo6zB7WED/s1600/25-IMG_20180922_130045.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="889" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdd8PslKQjiWg0mGErW5whsXd31jRfgRNpvg-O27sE8kzvOMDRmt9-_lN1fKEyHU7vClS5s8HuxvodIfs3dBW8uEkgg6BHgRBkzkUkkun40wzseeuMvX2hSBX_VXQ97iLMZ1LBo6zB7WED/s400/25-IMG_20180922_130045.jpg" width="222" /></a></div>
<br />
However, I preferred the booths of smaller game studios because it was easier to see their games without all the bells and whistles. In particular, I loved the indie games section in the international hall.
<br />

One of the most popular <a href="https://expo.nikkeibp.co.jp/tgs/2018/common/json/2018y0920tgs/tgs_release_20180920_en.pdf">platforms</a> was the computer (e.g.: Steam, browser and Windows games). I had never used Steam before, but right after the event I opened an account. The other main popular platforms were mobile (206 titles for Android were exhibited); Nintendo switch, which has the most interesting games for my taste; and the PS4.
<br />
<br />
<b>Conclusions:</b> participating in this event was a good experience. There was a total of 668 exhibitors and 298,690 visitors. There was so much to see that I probably missed many interesting spots. Here is a <a href="https://expo.nikkeibp.co.jp/tgs/2018/common/json/2018y0920tgs/tgs_release_ja_20180905_title.pdf">complete list of exhibitors</a>, the games they released, their genre, and the platforms they support. Next, I am planning to explore Steam and I would love to try some games on the Nintendo Switch.

Although the anime is quite silent at times, both its <a href="https://youtu.be/4-PkAQcuZOw">opening</a> and ending (see above) songs are really awesome. The opening song, Duvet, was written in English by the British band Bôa. The ending song, Tooi sakebi (遠い叫び), was composed by <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reichi_Nakaido">Reichi Nakaido</a>, also known as Chabo, and the lyrics are written in Japanese. I found the lyrics translated into English <a href="https://animekotoba.wordpress.com/2017/09/09/%E9%81%A0%E3%81%84%E5%8F%AB%E3%81%B3-lain-ending-theme/">here</a>, but I couldn't find them in Spanish. Here is the translation into Spanish and a romaji version that I wrote for you to sing along. You can find the Kanji version on the website that published the English translation. I omit that version here to avoid possible copyright violation issues.<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiD0CLx71ANwBD5MwfLx6vg8eVopPOwqDXf5y18LNNajqcdxz0NSjG0lL5lTQm53P6bdPRDMQZQQmV8AK3DPcv1nLETb6_-YKrnfvy_bdrWwQZdsd2q5j3LLWp821FRBUkISo3uq4CfX_4a/s1600/2-bt-speaker-connectors.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="758" data-original-width="1000" height="303" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiD0CLx71ANwBD5MwfLx6vg8eVopPOwqDXf5y18LNNajqcdxz0NSjG0lL5lTQm53P6bdPRDMQZQQmV8AK3DPcv1nLETb6_-YKrnfvy_bdrWwQZdsd2q5j3LLWp821FRBUkISo3uq4CfX_4a/s400/2-bt-speaker-connectors.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I got this nice Bluetooth speaker as a present from Redhat during a conference in Japan. It works by pairing your phone with the Bluetooth speaker to play music. The speaker provides three push buttons (volume down, play, volume up), a USB interface to charge the battery, a power on switch and a microphone.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIBVn9ZQ7AUFhEUU7peLNK0pZJcxsgmH2oPU2ZevZiTDMP8gG8FBs4TbDKX8mPB6CXNcFvSL4H6fp4YS2HKmy1oov3IQXx2HWER2zgdOQqhltdGTQpVS9eDDW8QvH7xsEzxNtzmKY2hWyw/s1600/1-bt-speaker-buttons.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="750" data-original-width="1000" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIBVn9ZQ7AUFhEUU7peLNK0pZJcxsgmH2oPU2ZevZiTDMP8gG8FBs4TbDKX8mPB6CXNcFvSL4H6fp4YS2HKmy1oov3IQXx2HWER2zgdOQqhltdGTQpVS9eDDW8QvH7xsEzxNtzmKY2hWyw/s400/1-bt-speaker-buttons.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The speaker's body is made of ABS plastic and covered by a rubbery silicone wrapper with a nice matte finish. The wrapper has a suction cup to stick the speaker to a surface. Let's look inside.<br />

The body is held together with screws. The speaker and the microphone are glued to the top part. The printed board has pads for an extra microphone and LEDs. I suppose they left them there to customize the final product depending on the price. Finally, the lithium battery is glued to the bottom part.<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYTQfT-4HKdA08HZalUPWHXi0__aexk31Oo2cpVukI2GeHRpWezoLaOgYmKTz5TKP5KjARt2GurOk4N9WkVl1KD7swnop3JnsAho1RZt-RodEsjebOgtWAD0s4W6MI01FIqBW3ekI7s3w5/s1600/5-bt-speaker-chips.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1333" data-original-width="1001" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYTQfT-4HKdA08HZalUPWHXi0__aexk31Oo2cpVukI2GeHRpWezoLaOgYmKTz5TKP5KjARt2GurOk4N9WkVl1KD7swnop3JnsAho1RZt-RodEsjebOgtWAD0s4W6MI01FIqBW3ekI7s3w5/s400/5-bt-speaker-chips.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
The speaker is connected to the chip at the lower side of the board, an <a href="http://www.datasheetcafe.com/ltk8002d-datasheet-audio-amplifier/">LTK8002D</a> audio amplifier made by <a href="http://www.ltkchip.com/about.html">LTKCHIP TECHNOLOGY</a> (<a href="http://sangorrin.blogspot.com/2015/06/makerfaire-shenzhen-2015.html">ShenZhen</a>). The brains of the Bluetooth speaker are implemented using the AC1533D83234, an SoC (System on chip) made by <a href="http://www.zh-jieli.com/">ZhuHai JieLi Technology</a> (<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zhuhai">Zhuhai City</a>). From what I could see by inspecting datasheets of similar chips, it (probably) contains a 32bit RISC CPU, GPIO pins, PWM, ADC, DAC and Bluetooth capabilities.<br />
<br />
<b>Conclusions:</b> the way the Bluetooth speaker works is quite easy to understand. First, the SoC gets its power from the battery through a voltage rectifier (on the top side). The SoC also uses an external oscillator circuit to generate its own clock signals. The 3 buttons (and LEDs) are connected to the GPIO pins. When the switch is on and we press the play button, the SoC will receive audio data from our phone through the Bluetooth antenna which is printed onboard. Then, the SoC will convert these audio data into an analog signal, adjusting it to the current volume level. Finally, the SoC will forward the signal to the speaker through an audio amplifier. The most interesting part from disassembling this device has been finding and reading the website of <a href="http://www.zh-jieli.com/">ZhuHai JieLi Technology</a> (thanks to Google translate!). I didn't even know this company existed. I wonder how many more companies and chips from China are left for me to discover.Sangorrinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13773761503933579563noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7227407500212291254.post-37960023399998444252018-07-04T14:24:00.003+02:002018-09-04T13:27:32.387+02:00Pinguchan: Let the game begin!A year went by since I published <a href="http://sangorrin.blogspot.com/2017/04/pinguchan-book-for-children.html">my first children's book</a>. This book is quite different from the previous one:<br />
<ul>
<li>I created it completely on my computer, using <a href="https://www.clipstudio.net/en">Clip Studio Paint</a>.</li>
<li>The artwork has a very different style and was created under time pressure.</li>
<li>It contains 34 pages in total (the previous one had 15).</li>
<li>It is distributed with a free license (<a href="https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/">CC By 4.0</a>). For example, any individual, schools or commercial publishers can freely modify, print and distribute the book as long as they satisfy the "attribution" condition in the license.</li>
<li>Anyone can download the book for free in PDF.</li>
<li>And more importantly, I got the help of many <b>amazing friends</b> who translated the book into their native languages. One of my goals was to get the book translated into languages with a small speaking community. Those languages aren't usually commercially attractive compared to major languages (e.g.: French or Russian) and for that reason, many families can't read books to their children in their native language. If you are interested in contributing a translation please put a comment below this post or send me an e-mail.</li>

Please, download the book in any of the following languages:<br />

I am a volunteer for a local group that promotes multiculturality by reading children's books in multiple languages. For example, here I am reading "The very hungry caterpillar", written by Eric Carle, in the Spanish language.<br />

<b>Conclusions: </b>first, I would like to thank my friends for their altruist translations. By comparing different translations I could learn many words and realized that all the effort spent in the translations was really worth it. Second, despite the time pressure, I think I managed to deliver a nice children's book. It is true that I cheated sometimes and copy-pasted some of my artwork multiple times, but overall I think the result is good. I have to say that I am really enjoying the experience of reading my book in front of children and families. Finally, it would be really great if the book was used by schools or individuals around the world. I want to promote the minor language versions as much as I can.Sangorrinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13773761503933579563noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7227407500212291254.post-5126522729518345372017-07-30T05:26:00.001+02:002017-07-30T05:26:59.520+02:00Debugging the FMP RTOS on QEMUA few weeks ago I participated in the <a href="https://atnd.org/events/88555">7th edition</a> of Tokyo's self-made OS meetup (自作OSもくもく会). During the event there were lots of presentations that touched topics such as file systems, UEFI, kernel page handling, or memory allocation algorithms. The fireworks are launched from the south bank of the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arakawa_River_(Kanto)">Arakawa river</a> near <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kita-Senju_Station">Kita-Senju station</a>. However, I suggest watching them from the north bank since it's less crowded and the views are fantastic as well. Go to <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Umejima_Station">Umejima station</a> and follow the red path to get a nice viewing spot.

The place does get crowded but unless you are going with a big group of people, you shouldn't need to go early to secure a spot. We were 4 people and arriving at 19:00, just half and hour before the fireworks, would have been completely fine.

About 12,000 fireworks were launched in just an hour (19:30 to 20:30). Some of them were really impressive and looked huge. I took lots of pictures with my phone, some of them were blurry but some were ok.

Sometimes pieces of the fireworks would fly and reach our viewing spot. I suggest you bring some sunglasses to protect your eyes from the dust and objects coming down. It had been a while since I last went to a fireworks festival, and it was a great experience.

Some of them are powerful enough to be used with an arduino-like framework (<a href="http://www.pinguino.cc/">pinguino</a>) and others are much more constrained. For the former, I suggest using this <a href="http://akizukidenshi.com/catalog/g/gK-08010/">PIC18F2553 I/SO evaluation board</a>. For the latter, I suggest using a <a href="http://akizukidenshi.com/catalog/g/gI-00253/">PIC12F675 I/P</a> (or a <a href="http://akizukidenshi.com/catalog/g/gK-06758/">reference kit</a>). Despite being small and cheap, the PIC12F675 can be powerful enough for many simple applications. Let's take a look at its specs:
<br />
<ul>
<li>10-bit A/D converter (4 channels)</li>
<li>6 GPIO pins</li>
<li>Timers</li>
<li>Analog comparator</li>
<li>Memory (ROM: 1K words, RAM: 64B, EEPROM: 128B)</li>
</ul>
To compile code for the PIC12F675 you need to install the MPLAB-X IDE and the free edition of the MPLAB XC8 (PIC12F675 is an 8-bit microcontroller) compiler.

Then, prepare a circuit like the one in the picture on a breadboard. The PIC12F675 contains an internal oscillator so you don't need to supply one. Here we are just connecting the GP2 pin to an LED with a resistor. Additionally, we connect VPP to VDD through a 10kohm resistor and VDD to VSS (ground) with a 0.1uF for programming the chip with Pickit3.

Build the <a href="http://www.picexperience.it/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=21:hw-pic12f675&catid=8&Itemid=101">example source code</a> provided by Paolo Rognoni with the MPLAB-X IDE. Connect the board to a 5V power supply and program it with a <a href="http://akizukidenshi.com/catalog/g/gM-03608/">Pickit3</a>.
<br />
<br />
<b>Important:</b> if you just bought the Pickit3 and get a "Connection failed" error and a RED status LED, the firmware in your Pickit3 may need an update. In that case, download the Pickit3 programmer application (I had to use <a href="http://www.microchip.com/development-tools/downloads-archive">v3.10</a>) and open it with the Pickit3 unplugged. Plug it in and click Tools > Check communication. Hopefully it will be connected. Next, click on Tools > Download Pickit operating system, and choose 'hex' to write onto pickit3. Then, click on Tools > Revert to MPLAB Mode and exit the application (if it says no permissions for writing, change the folder permissions to writable). Finally, start MPLAB IPE program (already installed with MPLAB X), click "Connect" and it will update the firmware for you.
